The Artist / The Designer

Resume

Peter, the artist, is as natural a happening as the sun rising in the sky. He grew up in the northern woods of Ontario, Canada along the rugged and picturesque shores of Lake Superior. His environment instilled in him a great love of the outdoors and all of nature’s wonders.

At age 14, Peter moved to Toronto with his family. Upon entering Grade 10 Peter’s high school art teacher was quick to recognize his artistic talents and sent him to the private New School of Art. Upon graduation Peter was searching for adventure, therefore, at the age of 18 he moved to Los Angeles and took up employment with a coat of arms company where he researched and illustrated family crests. Seeking more fulfillments in his work Peter subsequently moved back to Toronto where he created his own company and worked on a free-lance basis designing stores. The artist in Peter never stopped painting during these transitions and in 1974 he started entering his numerous paintings of flowers, animals and portraiture in local exhibitions and competitions. These works were executed in a number of different mediums. Peter had developed his own style by combining airbrush technique, pencil, guache, watercolour and ink. By 1975 he was winning every award available.

After years of experimentation and development with different mediums and long extended trials using the airbrush gun, Peter overtime had developed and mastered a technique that would lead him to his next great success in the world of art.

In 1982 he began working on a series of women. Peter had discovered that the most significant effect of the then, rare ‘airbrush’ was the controlled graduations that he could achieve while depicting the soft and supple faces of the women he choose to paint. Who were these women? Peter had chosen some of the great silver screen stars of the thirties and forties. These were the great glamorous beauties that we had all grown up with and watched over and over again as we marveled at their perfect features. The simple mention of their names, Marlene Dietrich, Ingrid Bergman, Marilyn Monroe… all conjure an instant vision of beauty, glamour and sophistication.

Peter was not only able to paint that glamour on the canvas but he was able to give his audience so much more. He paid great attention to his subject’s eyes. He depicted the women’s eyes to reflect their great strength and depth of character.

The viewer immediately knew these women were thinking far beyond just having their picture taken yet he was incredibly careful not to lose his subject’s natural feminine beauty. Hair, clothing and jewelry were all given the utmost of importance when it came to detail and they were indeed more perfect, more glamorous, than any woman could imagine.

After several years of sold-out exhibitions in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Hawaii and Toronto, Peter, unable to meet the demand for originals decided to produce a series of limited edition prints. Again, like Peter’s women, these prints were to be like no others!

Peter sought out the best serographer in the world, Michael Caza of the Atelier D’Art in Paris, France. Caza had proven over and over again throughout his career to truly be ‘the best’. His portfolio of work included serigraphs printed for artists such as Picasso, Miro, Chagall and Dali. Peter flew directly to Paris in order to collaborate with Caza and began work on 4 individual images for the silk-screen press. Caza and Peter produced serigraphs that were put through the press 26 times with 26 different colours. Peter struggled to produce his images like his paintings therefore he spent countless hours experimenting with the serigraphy process in order to get the perfect print. The two determined artists hard work had paid off. In 1986, the Screen Printers Association International awarded the first serigraph "Les Bijoux" with the ‘Golden Squeegee Award’ for the ‘Worlds Best Serigraph’.
